Why the characteristics of plant material could matter
If we follow the theory that microorganisms do not want to eat organic matter which requires a lot of energy to decompose, we could say that planting plants with low quality litter (meaning that decomposition requires more energy) is the way to go. This way the decomposition of organic matter would go slower, less respiration by soil microorganisms is performed and therefore the respiration of CO2 from the soil is decreased. The plant material would stay undecomposed in the upper layer of the soil and we could increase the amount of carbon put into the soil while decreasing the respiration and thus CO2 emission from the soil.
